The team unlocking a state of awe

Mark Haidar

Inspiration and Co-Founder

Day Job: Investor and board member.

Why This: Read more about Mark’s remarkable story on our story page.

Favorite Toy(s): Helicopters and planes.

Favorite Place in the Galaxy: In the heart of
the pillars of creation.

Claire Haidar

Co-Founder

Day Job: Sheep farmer and board member.

Why This: Because the universe is too beautiful not to share with every child on this planet.

Favorite Toy(s): Plants: any kind, anywhere.

Favorite Place in the Galaxy: At the edge of infinity.

Van Walke

Role: Second guesser to the technical staff doing the real work. HVAC penetration testing; telescope computer systems cable management; user management.

Day Job: CTO at a technology company.

Why This: I came into Dusk Observatories by accident- more from a love of technology and adventure in the desert than a love of the stars. But, the confluence of technology and space has proven to be a source of tremendous fun and fascination.

Favorite Toy(s): Does my childhood Commodore 64 count?

Favorite Place in the Galaxy: The Orion Nebula: As a child the Orion constellation was always a fascination - the hunter in the winter sky. Thus it is fitting to choose the nebula in the Orion’s sword. It is a stellar nursery where stars are born and is one of the brightest visible to the naked eye.

Greg Aker

Role: Anything I’m asked to do. Write software, make tutorials, manual labor.

Day Job: Software engineer.

Why This: Having a small part in giving students the opportunity to discover space from a world-class observatory is an amazing feeling.

Favorite Toy(s): This is a really hard question. I have seven saxophones, three telescopes and four bicycles. They are my most favorite possessions, bring a lot of happiness and trigger different pieces of my brain.

Favorite Place in the Galaxy: I never get tired of looking at all the beauty in Cygnus.

Bryan Cogdell

Role: Telescope specialist.

Day Job: Founder of SkiesAway Remote Observatories and running the facility that houses the online telescopes.

Why This: I love to help provide access to the cosmos in a fantastically real and tangible way: to bring new energy and creativity to inquisitive minds; using
a telescope as the medium. From the late professor Hawking to students exploring Bryce Canyon, I want to help bring the magic to Dusk Observatories and The Limitless Space Institute.

Favorite Toy(s): “Big Mak”, a 254mm f/10 Rumak Maksutov-Cassegrain.

Favorite Place in the Galaxy: Atop the Santa Lucia mountains overlooking
the Milky Way Galaxy itself.

Ben Stineman

Role: Networking and Computers.

Day Job: Head of Cloud Infrastructure at Vinli.

Why This: I love the idea of helping bring space to the masses - especially young people and students who have a passion to learn. I also have the privilege of working with my friend’s YouTube channel Everyday Astronaut which has allowed me to witness moments in space flight.

Favorite Toy(s): RC planes, drones and guitars.

Favorite Place in the Galaxy: Orion.

Tracey Foulkes

Day Job: I work across time zones so my day job extends into the night … but I am not a stripper!

Why This: Claire and I work well together. She reached out to me at a time that I was exploring exciting projects to put my super powers to further use and for greater good … the stars aligned.

Favorite Toy(s): Playful conversations with interesting humans about everything and nothing.

Favorite Place in the Galaxy: My home.

Doug Foulkes

Day Job: Videographer.

Why This: I'm all about telling the story, this is a great story to tell. Oh, yes and it has a huge nerd percentage.

Favorite Toy(s): I've got lots but currently my favorite 3 are my Sony A7C camera and DJI RSC2 Gimbal (great fun) and my X-man Tornado V3 Speedcube.

Favorite Place in the Galaxy: On my stoep (porch) with a glass of full bodied Shiraz, looking up in awe at the Milky Way.

Ivan Colic

Role: Bringing DUSK to the world through my branding and design skillset.

Day Job: Creative Director at an incredible animation studio at the Southern tip of the Africa.

Why This: As a kid, I dreamt of becoming an astronomer or an artist when I grew up - and well, art won! Being able to work with Mark and Claire to bring their Dusk vision to life has been a privilege and makes that little boy inside me very happy.

Favorite Toy(s): My Nespresso coffee machine, graphic novels and some Black Keys albums is unbeatable.

Favorite Place in the Galaxy: Looking up at the curvature of the Earth on a deep dark evening sky in the middle of nowhere.
